I once heard a Canadian say that the reason that Canadians are so concerned about other people’s welfare is that every Canadian is four walls, a roof and a working heater away from death for months every year. For most of the US, that isn’t true.
An American friend of mine lived in Canada for several years. He used to enjoy the looks of horror he got from Canadians when he’d walk across a street against the traffic light.
My son lived in Canada for a couple of years and testifies that the rumors are true: Canadians really are nice. He sent me a photo of what passes as “graffiti” up there: Someone had spray-painted a smiley-face and “Have a Nice Day!” on a wall.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! When we celebrate the failure of British gun control and we resisted tyrannical rule. April 19, 1775, the British moved to arrest Samuel Adams and others AND to seize the guns and ammo in Concord. Paul Revere, William Dawes, and others rode to warn the people “The British are coming!” It was a call to arms to warm people to take action to protect Adams and others and to protect our guns and ammo from being confiscated by the British. In that first battle, it was not a strategic victory for either side but the fight was on!
Shame the people in places like Venezuela are trapped in the consistent failure of Socialism and now cannot defend themselves as the govt attacks them and runs over them with armored vehicles since the govt first had the people register their guns and then confiscated them leaving them at the mercy of the govt. For those that say Trump is a Hitler (I don’t care for him but the alternative was a traitor) and believe “Einstein” Cortez that we are running concentration camps (so not true) then you should absolutely fear universal background checks (which involve gun registration) as you should want to be prepared to defend our country and ourselves also.
If we hadn’t declared independence, slavery would have been abolished in 1834, when Great Britain abolished slavery by an act of parliament everywhere.
If the Colonies had stayed within the United Kingdom they would have probably kept the existing political system that is used in Canada. And with the equivalent of the National Health Act no overfed health insurance companies to deal with.
Not that I’ve read a lot of it, but I’m intrigued by the historical fiction genre, where people write novels about what would have happened if, say, the Civil War had never happened. (Which, I HAVE read Underground Airlines by Ben H. Winters and recommend anybody do the same.) A lot of scenarios have been explored, but you don’t see too many about what might have happened if America hadn’t declared independence from England and everything north of Mexico became just one big Canada. I think the reason why is that it would have been one of the most uneventful books ever. A couple of wars don’t happen, we spell a few words just a little differently, we have half the number of national anthems at hockey games, and everybody is just as weirdly obsessed with the royal family. And we’re nicer. So not much of a novel. But, at the risk of sounding unpatriotic, I think I could live with that. Especially if we got the maple leaf flag. Best flag out there.
Sigh…and as we bicker, the world gets dirtier, hotter, and more crowded-with only 12 years or so to reverse course, the US leadership and citizens like some in this blog just ride that train right off of the rails…

Maybe Canadians are nice because they see the examples we (the US) are setting.

If it weren’t for Canada, where would those who fled the results of 2016 have gone? Certainly not south.

Yellowknife. Tomorrow. High 78, low 51. Yes, I know it gets cold there. “Complex seeing must be practiced.”—Bertolt Brecht.

You want to discover the limits of Canadian politeness and niceness, mention Justin Trudeau.

I’d sure like to import some of that Canadian kindness stuff: I know exactly where to start putting it into the chemtrails.
