This excerpt from “Black Beauty” sums war up nicely:
I said, “I have heard people talk about war as if it was a very fine thing.”
“Ah!” said he, “I should think they never saw it. No doubt it is very fine when there is no enemy, when it is just exercise and parade and sham fight. Yes, it is very fine then; but when thousands of good brave men and horses are killed or crippled for life, it has a very different look.”
I was playing an online building game and youngster ask me why I wasn’t play.My answer— Why would I play when I’ve been in the real thing. (On watch at start of Tet Offensive)
Mr. Ramirez may be just a character in a comic strip, but he represents the Greatest Generation; the men and women from all races, backgrounds and religions who put their lives on hold to spend several years saving the world. Many, like Mr. Ramirez, left parts of themselves on the field of battle. Sadly, others made the ultimate sacrifice and never came home. All have to be honored as hero’s. Thank you, Mr. Cantos and Mr. Castellanos, for showing the sacrifice that the Greatest Generation made for the freedoms we all enjoy today.

I remember reading this in the newspaper when it was originally published. I’m glad it’s being reprinted.

This is a lesson ALL nations’ leaders should learn- preferably by experience of their own national service.

I was going to say: except Vulcans but this comic is very serious today and deserves respect. Good point.

People who cause wars are very seldom on the front lines. They rattle their sabers from far away and let “other people” take the hits.
