    Nathaniel West was one of the Americans who went to Paris after Hemingway and Gertrude Stein got famous. When he got there everyone was trying to be more outrageous and eccentric than the other wannabes. His schtick was to go the other way; he’d dress like a banker and pretend to be offended by every one else. As long as he acted outraged by them he got invited to all the best parties.
