I think Steve is less concerned about the purity of comics, and more about the takeover of Comic-Con by Big Media PR divisions looking to blitz a certain demographic and turning it into a circus of promotions of comic book adjacent media.
I remember when ComiCon was all about comic books. Now it’s all about movies, tv, video games, toys, etc. Merchandising is a natural outcome but I do miss the old days. I like visiting the artist’s alley and seeing my neighbor Sergio Aragones.

Nicely contrasted. But do bear in mind that the pulp comics where Spidey first appeared were in it for the money too.
