In the 1950’s we lived in a small town in Washington state.
In the town barber’s window was a jar of leeches.
I assumed they were dead.
I think leeches may yet be used for some medical purposes. For example, leeches were applied to James Joyce’s eyes several times to absorb blood build up caused by hemorrhages.

It’s really tough finding FDA approved prescription leeches these days.
Leeches are indeed still in use by some practitioners today. Red was just lucky to find one in his insurance network!
