Normally this strip is drawn pretty well, but something is seriously not right with Dr. Fabbi’s face. It’s like she was drawn at a caricature booth on a boardwalk somewhere.

I think the title of the course is self-explanatory. Micro – at the smallest of anything and economics – what resources support civilization so, together, how smallest aspects of resources support/impact the civilization (or anything, actually) – unquoting Dr Fabbi – at the individual level. Bets can help by applying her Souffle eBay sale experience.

I was not a fan of economics while in college; if they had explained the stuff in English instead of using invented ‘social-scientific’ terms, I probably would have understood faster…

I’m just here to observe the ‘know-it-all’s’ dissect this comic strip apart.

My eyes are glazing over,, too; but then, I’m old and numbers and concepts are not my thing. Hope Bets can paraphrase for Tiffany to turn the words into something real that Tiff can relate to. Then the light bulb will come on.

I did a course in economics in the 70’s -There were about 60 people in the class – I remember waking up with a start and looking at the other four people who had turned up – two of whom were fast asleepI didn’t actually learn any economics until I watched some of John Cleese’s superb videos on the subject about seven years later

If you are focused on ie then you are missing the joke today. Actually, I’ve heard it spoken quite a bit, as well as OMG, which I find rather strange, since both are abbreviations. But the beauty of language is it is always changing.

Tiff is in this class so Greg can impress and flatter his real life friend, Dr.Fabbi. Tiff belongs in a boutique, doing creative manicures, becoming financially independent, and working at what she is best at….being sexy.

In Tiffany’s eyes, you can see the real pain in her brain. If she can survive this course, she can also graduate with good grades. GO TIFFANY! And go Tara too♡

Why is Dr. Fabbi drawn like a real person rather than the other people in this comic strip?

So Tiff, if all the girls are wearing these ‘Way Cool’ earrings w/ rinestones (Diamonds) but you can’t afford those so you design, make and sell earrings using a cheaper more accessable stone, and you become RICH is that Microeconomics?

Probably just the lesson that Tiff needs to learn. She never had “scarce resources.” Until now.

Will Tiffany decide to try to “dig deep” and figure this out herself? Or will she bail? Or will she be dragged into understanding by help from Bets?

I think whichever route she takes will unfortunately be very defining for her future.

This is one of the very useful things that can come from “study groups” … wherein one member can describe a concept to others in their vernacular, in a way they can understand. Perhaps Bets and Tiff will form a Study Group!

This woman is drawn like a hybrid cross between Cathy and a sea manatee. The eyes on his drawings have gotten odd.

In my experience , courses are only difficult when the teachers aren’t very good.

i.e. e.g. translates to a complete sentence: “That is an example.”

I think it will be temporary, though. And, I think that Tiffany will find a way to do just fine in this class! :)

I’m struck by the different depictions of the classroom settings by Greg. Apparently microecon is well attended, as shown by the silhouettes. Art classes were depicted as such. But never, in my memory, was chem lab or lecture.

Some others have mentioned the “dear in headlights” look to Tiffany’s eyes. I see that too, showing some fear of not being able to do something unfamiliar and hard. Bets, I believe, will help her understand how to confront her fears, pass the course, and ultimately be independent and as a bonus handle the awful Ann, and her erstwhile father. Onward and Upward!

Greg has usually shown his post high school classroom strips with three characters interacting; Luann, Jack and either Tara or Nil. This is often done for the acerbic, comic effect. Will he introduce a third character into this mix? He already has quite a large constellation of characters I this college milieu!

The two-person depicted chem lab was an intro to a new Luann regular friend, Tara. Is microecon introducing Tiff to a new regular friend, Bets? Will Gunther act as a male linking character in this friendship, like Jack does for Luann and Tara?

Dr. Fabbi-lous’ description sounds like what used to be called “Home Ec.” :o(

I taught Economics to high school students. They would usually get the broad concepts and sometimes even find them interesting. It was the math and graphs that would often do them in.

The professor’s facial features are drawn unlike any other character in the strip. It’s as if she’s from a different strip altogether.

Economics is a bunch of people trying to mathematically prove what they don’t know. For all the pseudo scientific pretensions it’s adopted, in reality it’s little more than astrology with dollar bills.

Tiff will ace the course once she understands that she and Ann are the ‘competing ends’ and Mr. Farrell’s time and money are the ‘scarce resources.’

Gunther is the scarce commodity.

“….the behavior of an economy at the individual level…”. Once Tiffany learns how to focus and “tune in”, she will realize how relevant this statement is to herself and her business interests. Here’s hoping for that outcome.

In just One Sentence, the Professor used at least 4 words that Tiff has never heard before.

Basic economics: You’ve got something I want. Tiffany definitely has the assets to prove this definition. Now we determine value and cost and method of payment.

Micro loans have found to work with people with little money. Given reasonable no added cost of the loan they have turned them into thriving businesses in India. The opposite of Pay Day loan sharks we have.

I had the same expression as Tiffany while reading that. I even read it multiple times. It didn’t get any clearer.
