I cannot recall having to write that essay, even in grade school. I think our teachers had read so many that they just weren’t willing to read another 30 of the same stuff. We did have to write something but they were (slightly) more interesting: “A whole page about your favorite movie or book.” Or “Would you choose to go with Davy Crocket on his adventures? Why?” (there was a big Davy Crocket movie: Half the guys had “coonskin” hats).
I enjoy this comic, as Frazz and kids are always interesting, but I also would have appreciated seeing interaction with some of the other adult characters during the summer arcs. Even while on vacation they would have some contact with the children.
I read a FB post about how these “What I did” speeches can really hurt poor kids whose major accomplishment is surviving. I don’t want to ‘dumb down’ school, that’s done enough already, but the poster had a point. Maybe do something else instead, like a “Place I want to go” instead – wishes are free.
Old Ox Brewery, in Ashburn, VA, just released a special-edition Frazz IPA, “A Hoppier Place.”
Old Ox is a local operation, and even though Prohibition has been repealed for some time now, they can’t ship. Unless you live in the DC area, or know your own personal Al Capone who does, it could be tricky to get your hands on some.
But I have it on good authority* it’s worth it. Long-time Frazz devotee and even longer-time friend Jon Brandt, who not only has great taste but lives in the right place, describes it as “… hazy, not terribly bitter and just 5.5% ABV. It’s that dry-hopped style that emphasizes the fruitiness of the hops rather than the bitterness. So nice, I had two!” Thanks, Jon — and also for the photos! And thanks to Old Ox for the supremely flattering idea, for being such a delight to work with, and of course for the beer!

There’s almost a month still left in Summer. I guess only people without kids get to appreciate that.
