Not to be cruel, Charlie Brown, but you DO have strange problems. 1..You don’t recognize Lucy the psychiatrist is the same one that pulls the ball away AND 2. you keep doing the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome.
Psychiatrist have changed a LOT during my life time. I took 4 Psych courses in college: Psych 101, Child Psych, Adolescent Psych & Abnormal Psych. Things which were definitely considered ‘abnormal’ behaviors back then are now accepted as ‘mainstream’. Psychologists & Psychiatrists need to go back to their ‘roots’.
I’ve met a few psychiatrists in my life. My parents took me to one when I was a teenager, and I’ve been to a few courses taught by psychiatrists (e.g. courses about human relations, bullying in the workplace, etc.), and all of them have been very similar to Lucy in this strip – completely useless.
This is how naïve Charlie Brown is. Here, he’s going to ask his psychiatrist what to do. Yet, it’s the same girl who wants to pull the football away him. What kind of advise, did he think he was going to get?
The only thing I got out of my Psych classes was: It is OK to talk to yourself, most everyone does. You can even answer yourself, nothing wrong with that! When you need to worry is when you start interrupting yourself!”
Take a look at who your “psychiatrist” is, the same person who wants you to kick the football. The same person who ALWAYS pulls the football away so you can land flat on your back and kill yourself. You need to begin to realize she not a psychiatrist. She just claims to be something she’s not so she can overcharge for extremely terrible, and deliberately cruel, advice. She’s got no degree and no license to practice and you need to close her down.
No, Charlie Brown. Lucy is holding the football for you to kick. She is also your Psychiatrist. Thus she has a major conflict of interest. The duel roles results in her giving you contradictory advice. The sooner you realize that, Charlie Brown, the sooner you will refuse to even attempt to kick the football. Grow up Charlie, grow up! 8^)
I’m surprised CB lands on his back. Based on panel 11 (3rd from end) he should have either landed on his head or gone all the way around and landed on his stomach.

Charlie Brown is over rotating. If he could rotate 360° instead of 450°, he could land on his feet.

Even when I was younger I always thought these were a little too mean. Why not just let the boys kick the football?

When your “psychiatrist” called the girl “the fun type” that should have been all the warning you needed not to take her advice!

This is what we call a conflict of interests on Lucy’s part.

Finally, back to 1972 Sundays after a 1966 replacement last week. This is the annual Charlie Brown/Lucy football strip.

Well Chuck, were you expecting a different result when your “problem” and your “counselor” are the same?

But she knows everything about manipulating you.

And that’s why Lucy has earned herself a place in Huey Freeman’s book about hate.
