It’s the time for slanted mouth expressions, apparently. :-/
We find out Det. Frisk’s given name for the first time. Tracy does seem to be on friendly terms with her now, addressing her by her first name. They did clash a bit at first, but Tracy invited her to join his team after she recovered from her first case. She was always more of a loner, though, as she admits in today’s strip.
So, the big bad bootlegging baby broker barters in black-market bitty bouncing babies? Fortunately Frisk is fiercely following this felonious offspring fixer!
As someone who likes the late Mike Kilian’s writing on the strip, I can’t describe how happy this current story is making me. This is the first time Curtis has brought back a character created by Kilian, and I like the terse, brisk way Frisk explains her survival, very much in keeping with her original character.
Kilian used Frisk in two stories, both started in 2003, and both happily available here on GoComics’ archive. Her first story was the Filligree Murder Case and ran from July 3-September 22 of that year. Her second story was the second Sal Monella case (the first SM case is sadly unavailable on GC) and ran from December 19, 2003-March 10, 2004.
the artwork here is just as terrible as Erik Larsen’s work on The Doom Patrol series back in the 90’s… theres no way youre gonna tell me that the same guy did the artwork during the week, because the art here is blocky and choppy, and no inker in the WORLD would screw up the smooth lines that are presented during the week THIS badly!
Sorry Stilldamatt, apologies in advance, but this is positively “LOCHER-ISH” work
Y’know… the powers that be had a problem with Jewel being kidnapped (if i remember correctly.. neil, etc wanna set this straight please?) and they had a serious issue with “Sweatbox’s Crypt of 1000 Relatives” so what makes ANYONE believe that this story will ever come to fruition?
I’d imagine that a story about blackmarket babies would be just as taboo as child predators and murdering your family and cramming them in a crypt? Hell they even cut the Polar Vortex story short (seemingly) because he was peddling drugs to school kids and it swerved rather suddenly to some ridiculous storyline that wasnt ever really detailed… same thing with Little Doc.
Can someone set Mike up with some story writing/creative writing classes so that he can maybe FINALLY figure out how to tell a complete tale in his specified time limit?

4-DT: You used to be a babe. Now I can’t even look directly at you. PRIMM: Same. But we gotta try. On 3, we turn around. 1, 2,… 5-DT: ARRRGHHHH! Whewf. That’s rough. Now I know how you won the gun battle. The other guy had his eyes closed! 6-PRIMM: Well I heard you been shot several times recently… 7-…when did they invent Ugly Seeking Bullets? 8-DT: I’ve missed this snappy repartee since you were killed Primm. PRIMM: I’M NOT DEAD IDIOT! DT: Oh yeah. You just look like you are.
Personally I find something deeply creepy about this character. Why was she on stage in Our Town (yes it was her, right down to the earrings) unless she is a professional actor (that was no am-dram). And that raises the question in my mind of whether this is the REAL Frisk at all, and what her true motivation might be. Is she a past victim of the baby broker, or using the investigation for something else? Maybe I’m overthinking this (as I often do), but there are layers here for sure.
Sorry tsull, I’m afraid that creative writing option has sailed, and the artwork, if this is an example sailed with it. Is it square jaw, sneer Sunday?
Today’s “Frieda Frisk, Cold Female Detective” looks very different from the Glenn Close-ish version of the dailies this past week. The shape of the head is longer, narrower, and more rectangular. Of course, everyone today is rather angular and harsh, but whereas this works well for Tracy (at least IMO his rendering today is appropriate), it does not look “right” (meaning, as we have become accustomed to expect) for Friskie. —And why must her nickname sound like a doggie treat or dog food?
But the takeaway today, I think, is that Tracy is going to get involved in the Howell babies case, forging a temporary alliance with Friskie….

Looks like Mrs. Howell has a sub-specialty to her baby broker business – assassinating people who investigate her…

The facts they do not lie
Read it and then sigh
Originality’s glee
Is gone for you and me
Just ponder number three
Look back and you will see
With interest on the wane
It’s definitely a pain
To faithfully endorse
An out of money horse

Does Dick Tracy never open his eyes? How does he manage to see with his eyes closed? Just wondering.

Frisk gathers facts of people
Places, names and kin connection
Howell sold babies for a price
To profit sans reflection.
Frisk is on a mission now
She works alone and thrives
Mystery man takes aim and shoots.
Shot grazes. Frisk survives.
Tracy arrives. To his surprise
Frisk is alive and well
Sal Monella drowned. Frisk endured.
That garbage scow did smell.
Frisk has ruffled feathers As she’s gathered names and dates
Sticks her beak in for a price
Thus tempting violent fate.
