“Classic story” about the same wrong sport: The bass section of an orchestra would slip out between movements and go to a bar next door for a few drinks, often joined by a couple of the cellists. One night between the 3rd and 4th movements of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony one said, “We need to get back to the hall!” “Relax,” said one of his mates. “I tied the conductor’s music down with string, so it’ll take him sometime to get it open.” So they used the extra time to get extra drunk, to the point that the two cellists passed out. So there they were with the score tied, two out, and the basses loaded in the bottom of the Ninth.

The only name that comes to mind, and I’m probably wrong in this, is Arthur Fiedler.

Wrong sport, but one of my college housemates played First Bass for the University of Iowa Symphony.
