Political correctness aside, I always felt, even as a kid, that “Fat Broad” was a very rude term. Nobody would use it today, and even in the past, except to insult someone. Political correctness pushed to extremes is what resulted in “blind” becoming “visually impaired”…that’s just silly. But “Fat Broad” to “Jane” is a good thing. About time, I say…
It’s about time. I’ve been reading this strip since the 70’s, and it always bugged me that the women didn’t have names, just went by descriptions of their physical appearance.
I can see why they did it. All the males in the strip have names, and in some cases, those names go with a certain mental image (although those images may be culturally dependent.) Grog, Clumsy Carp definitely match their appearance. Thor and Curls do to, although that’s a bit more of a stretch. B.C. is too generic for any particular image. The Fat Broad and The Cute Chick are descriptors and flat out objectification of women. While I doubt Johnny Hart intentionally did it, well, there it is. That said, I’d have gone with different names that would invoke images appropriate to the characters. Maud, or maybe Gertrude, for The Fat Broad; and Marilyn for The Cute Chick would work. Grace and Jane? Nah.
Minding one’s own business would make for much better relationships though too many now days go with the right to criticize but don’t want to be criticized.
It always seemed wrong to me that the men got names and the women didn’t, and that for all those men with different personalities there were only 2 women defined by their attractiveness or lack thereof.

I’m not sure I prefer “Jane” to “The Fat Broad”, but change is inevitable I guess. On with the new, PC, B.C.!

I like to keep busy. I’m sort of like some sub-atomic particles: if I am not traveling to close the speed of light, I cease to exist.
However, every now and then, I unplug. It’s nice to take a “Me Day” every now and then. Let the world figure out how to get along without you.

Nothing wrong with taking a day off. The concept of “weekend” is only about 120 years old.

What’s next? I guess we need to change Clumsy Carp’s name too. Clumsy is so damaging to his self-esteem; can’t have that.. >:(
