Time to put up applesauce for the year! We had a few old apple trees in the yard when I was a kid. In fall we had to harvest them, even the downers, and bring them to the canning cellar in the basement. My mother would get my aunt over, and it would be non-stop Polish chit-chat while they peeled, cored, and boiled those apples. Delicious results for us and extended family!
Over the weekend, Georgia posted some pictures of a room in their real house they remodeled. Previously, she said it was a room that Goldie was kept in until her introduction to the boys. I wonder if that is where Goldie in the comic strip is right now? Will the boys hear or smell an unknown cat from a different place in the house?
I guess you can tell, I am anxious for the big orange cat to join the Station.
I remember going to pick apples every year when I was a kid. I vaguely recall it was an apple orchard somewhere in northern Rhode Island (probably the same place Georgia is referring to here). It was one of the first things I was excited to be able to do after getting my first prosthesis – being able to climb the trees to pick them (this was before they gave everyone “picker poles” to prevent tree-climbing).
The down side was having to eat apples for the next month. It’s probably why I’m not a big fan of apple pie as an adult (although I do still enjoy eating apples).
Years ago, when I had a dog, we went to help friends pick apples. My dog lay down and watched us for a while, appearing to grow more and more puzzled. Finally he picked up an apple, lay down with it, nosed it, licked it. took a single nibble, pushed it away, gave me a look that asked, “Why?”
O.T. – I have been reluctant to share my news because Brein43 and I received our diagnosis at about the same time, & I thought we would be going through this together, with a good outcome for both of us. When the outcome changed for Brein43 I didn’t feel comfortable sharing my good news. It just didn’t seem right, and it hurt a lot when she passed (which seems kind of odd I guess, because I didn’t know her in person) so that is why I have been kind of quiet about all of this. But here it is . . .
I had new CT Scan done and received excellent results on Wednesday. Things are looking very well. The tumors have shrunk overall by 65%; the one in the pancreas is gone completely, & the biggest one in the liver has shrunk considerably. There are no new ones.
JHH study team is extremely happy with these results. They talked about giving me time off for good behavior – an extra week off once in a while between treatments, for example. Another possible change is to lower the dose level. I am at level 3 for the study which is presently the highest, but still lower than what you would receive in standard care. There was talk about dropping me to level 2, but that is kind of my decision and I am not quite ready to go there yet. (With the results being this good so far, I am a little afraid to tamper with it.) Once you go down a level, you cannot go back up; it skews the study research to go back & forth. They assured me it would not change the results I have been seeing, but it could lessen some of the side effects, so it makes it a tempting offer. I just don’t want to make a knee-jerk decision that I might regret. Already did that once, luckily I was able to rectify it later.
Too many for the human body to eat? Says you. My family has an apple tree of our own, and let me tell you, the humans here have just barely scratched the surface on the max number of apples one can eat.
Also, think of all the applesauce you could make! Mm-mm!
Yesterday, my husband and I processed/canned 13 pounds of apples into applesauce. It was late when we finished canning and cleaning up the kitchen. However, the two of us have been doing a fair job of processing our garden.
It’s just not fair. I haven’t had anything to eat yet, [too much effort to go make breakfast before BCN] and everyone is talking about apples. And all of the good things made from them.
O.T. – It is so nice to be able to catch up with everyone here in the Orb! I work in mental health, and sometimes my own mental health needs a break, but I have been at least trying to read the daily adventures! I also got a chance to udate my fundraiser for my fluff butt’s surgery. We are just kind of in limbo right now, waiting to get the surgery scheduled. The vet would like chest xrays to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread above his leg, and there was talk of amuptation (not doing it) but otherwise we are doing well, just doing what we can to get the funds together for the op. Than you to all who have shared in the past, and than you all in advance for helping, sharing and spreading the word for us, the Orb is definitely appreciated! https://www.gofundme.com/f/surgery-for-swiftypaws
O.T. Hello, Gloria Flemming!! If you’ve been too busy to drop in to BCN, I understand … But I just wanted to let you know that I miss your posts! I’ve been thinking of you, and hoping that you’re doing and feeling well! XOXOXO
Actually, Elvis, I’d say that’s just about the right amount for apple picking…. unless you’re planning to eat them all right away. If not, there’s eating some apples right away, apple pies, apple sauce, apple butter, storing apples for later use, apple muffins, himmel und erde, apple tarts, apple cider, apple juice, apple bread, apple cakes, candy apples, carmel apples, stuffed pork chops with apple, kapusta with apple, stewed apple, apple jelly, apple fritters, fried apples, apple danish, mincemeat, apple stuffing, snowballs, etc.
The thing is, until the invention of cat litter, most cats in the US were either “come and go as they please” or put out at night. Hardly anyone had inside cats; the “sand box” idea enticed cats to bury it, but did nothing about the smell.

My granny would have sliced them and strung them up to dry. Then she would use them in the winter as the filling between her stack cakes.

I love most fruit, but apples, no. They always look better to me than they taste. Peaches, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, blackberries, yes.
