The problem I see, beyond the obvious one of rudeness of talking on the phone in public, is that so many people have one sort of earpiece or another in their ear all the time, and that those are getting so small it’s hard to distinguish them from personal jewelry. It is very difficult to distinguish at a glance (from 3 to 6 feet away) between some sort of ear bud speaker, a phone mic/speaker, and an ear-ring. If their head is turned so the device can not be seen, it is almost impossible.
Perhaps there is an answer for those who feel insulted when someone misinterprets their outspoken phone conversation. Simply shut the darned thing off and stop using it in public. And stop being so prickly about it if someone innocently misinterprets when they speak out loud in public. Especially when the response is polite and pleasant. Why be a jerk and instigate a confrontation?
