    I will confess, I have wondered about this myself. Someone falling off a 1000 foot building (not unusual in the comics) is going 172 miles an hour. They are still traveling at that same velocity when the superhero catches them in their arms. Plus, there’s the sideways velocity.

    This is a shout out to the controversial death of the character Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 from June 1973. She’d been thrown off a bridge and Spider Man tried to arrest her fall with his webbing. In the one time physics intruded into Marvel comics the sudden stop snapped her neck. It was also shown with slightly different circumstances in 2014’s film version, The Amazing Spider-Man 2
