What I find puzzling is that this is such a common them in cartoons, yet I never even heard of “detention” as punishment in any of the schools I attended.
And FWIW, I don’t think any of my teachers would have tolerated such an imposition on their time.
My excessive and poorly controlled wit got me a few sessions in detention. Sometimes one of my favorite teachers would have the duty and we’d have a nice visit.
Back in the day, (50’s & 60’s) detention was a real thing, so was corporal punishment. I always went the corporal punishment route when I had input. My theory was it get over with and move on.

Based on a rough count of the marks on the board, Eddie has been in detention since shorty after the Pilgrims arrived in New England.
