I think it would have been better if Calvin just did his homework. After all of the imagined obstacles he as faced, the underlying fact is that his homework still needs to done!
The interesting thing here is that Calvin’s dad clearly works in a fairly large city, despite the quaint “living out by the woods” nature of the family home. Though it’s been mentioned by the dad that “I feel like I have to work all the time to afford this place”, and a patent lawyer probably makes decent money, I would assume they live in a somewhat affluent suburb of this large town. But they really almost never go to the “city” portion that we can see- just the museum, zoo, and a few other things.
