Ah, thanks for the memories! We boys didn’t think it was gross. Dad, grampa and uncle Dale assigned us the job of scaling them, and they could filet them so fast we could hardly keep them busy. They seemed most delicious when grandma battered and cooked them, although mom and aunt Evelyn could make them more delicious than any other fish I’ve ever eaten. One time I caught a brook trout or two out of the creek behind our house, and gutted and cooked that, just fried it in some butter, and that was delicious in its own way.
When my son was maybe about this kids age he and his same age girl cousin and 2 year older boy, my sis and I took them camping at a lake, and one of them caught a fish…. and wanted it cooked!! Well, she only knew how to cook fish sticks, and I HAD watched people clean them, (with my eyes mostly covered) but never would touch one till it was a filet… I said I could tell you what to do, but I wouldn’t do it myself… and the 2 boys were didn’t really want do the cutting necessary, but my niece took over and followed my instructions (this was way before google, which could have shown her how!….in fact before kids even had their own smart phones!)… She is now a Nurse Practitioner, (In my opinion they make way better Doctors than those that have just gone to Med school to learn about what drug to use for which condition!!!)…. and deals with a lot of sewing back up rather than slicing open!

There’s nothing like the taste of fish when it was swimming just hours ago.

Sorry Jack, but I don’t think you’re ready to fillet your first fish.

If you think that’s bad; my Granddad took me hunting when I was about that age and I had to skin and gut whatever we shot.

You don’t need to scale them if you are skinning them
