My grandmother was the greatest influence in my life. In a way, I hope I did grow up to be a grandparent like her.
She was my port in a storm. She was the one person who understood me better than I understood myself. If she told me to jump up, I’d ask how high. I loved and respected her more than anyone else – including my parents.
It’s rather ironic that this cartoon appeared today because it was on this date in 1967 that she died. The last thing she asked about was if my mother had sent her (Grandma’s) Christmas card to me in Ireland, where I was living at the time.
I only hope I’m half the grandfather to my grandkids as she was a grand mother to us.

For a popsicle, Nelson might ‘say’ that he wants to be a gramma when he grows up, but not a gramma like YOU, Opal!

Nowadays, folks would say that’s possible.
