There was I believe a Perry Mason episode about the carbohydrates to alcohol syndrome. Perry had the man blow into the meter in court and it came back sober. After eating a line of soda crackers, they tested him again and he was legally drunk. Case dismissed, Perry wins again.
I and some friends were getting ready to go see a movie. We had met at my friend James’s house. James pulled out a jar of tiny peppers and said these are the hottest peppers you’ve ever tasted. My buddy John opened up the jar and plopped one in his mouth. His face turned bright red, and he made the mistake of bringing his hands to his face. The vapors or juice got in his eyes. We never made it to the movie.
Why would someone invent a pepper that’s too hot to eat (or so it seems)?
I think that “ anaphylactic shock” might be used incorrectly here. Anaphylactic shock is strictly related to a severe allergic reaction. Anything, potentially, can cause it. However, hot spices (peppers and wasabi, for example) can cause some mucus membrane swelling, without allergies being involved. It’s a physiological reaction to the chemical. Given that the heat factor is so extreme with this pepper, I would imagine that the physiological response could also be extreme.
Wikipedia says this pepper was “surpassed several months later by Pepper X at 3.18 million Scoville units” and “Experts at the university warned that swallowing one might cause death by choking…”
I first heard about auto-brewery syndrome decades ago when watching “60 Minutes”. They had a story about a child who was misdiagnosed as having a mental development disability. His parents kept pushing the doctors or taking the child to different doctors, until the actual condition was discovered.

I would hate to be the guy w/ABS. (Never heard of Garfield, NJ. Is it named after the since-1978 comic strip cat?)

Send those peppers to the current writer of Alley Oop. She’s already got the bacteria.

Why does Mike Smith hate people so much? He should be helping mankind by developing auto-brewery syndrome bacteria.
