Back in the 50s, when the movie Spartacus came out, Tony Curtis was derided for his Brooklyn accent. What people really meant without realizing it was not that he didn’t sound Roman, but that he didn’t sound Shakespearean.
Nitpicky Note: Holmes has, in fact, been played by American actors, both on film and on stage. Hell, the most celebrated Holmes back in Conan Doyle’s day was the American actor William Gillette. His play, “Sherlock Holmes” is still performed today. That said, one of the worst Holmes portrayals on film was by an American actor (Charlton Heston in “Crucifer of Blood.”).
