    Okay, but is Superman really the most popular, together with those other two? Sales-wise, I think the Hulk is more popular. Among the kids, Iron Man has more fans, I’d say, and Thor still gets more movies. Yeah, Supes is probably more iconic, more famous, but if we’re talking how many people will actually shell out to see him on the screen or read about him, well…

    Back in the 50s, when the movie Spartacus came out, Tony Curtis was derided for his Brooklyn accent. What people really meant without realizing it was not that he didn’t sound Roman, but that he didn’t sound Shakespearean.

    Nitpicky Note: Holmes has, in fact, been played by American actors, both on film and on stage. Hell, the most celebrated Holmes back in Conan Doyle’s day was the American actor William Gillette. His play, “Sherlock Holmes” is still performed today. That said, one of the worst Holmes portrayals on film was by an American actor (Charlton Heston in “Crucifer of Blood.”).
