Opal, if you don’t want the table set with mismatched silverware then get rid of the old stuff and buy a new all matching set. Otherwise, just say “Thank you, Earl.”

mismatched silverware: Earl’s plate must have salad fork, steak knife, dessert spoon whereas Opal’s plate must have dinner fork, butter knife, soup spoon (also, at least Earl knew the fork goes on the left-hand side of the plate and knife on the right-hand side thereof with the spoon next to it)

We buy random old fancy silverplate flatware at garage sales; “not matching” is the theme.

Why would you have mismatched silverware in the same drawer?

Silverware!? I could never afford it. My flatware has always been stainless steel.

Opal has CDO. It is like OCD but it is in alphabetical order, the way it should be.

He could have leased matching flatware. That would be the lease he could do.

By the time you get to be their age, you probably have a lot of mismatched silverware! Who cares, as long as you’ve got what you need…

If Opal wants matching silverware she needs to go to a restaurant.

I don’t care if the eating utensils are not perfectly matched. I care about do they get the food from the bowl/plate to my mouth without making a mess.

I’m struggling a little with thanking someone for doing a chore that is just as much their responsibility as yours. the mismatch thing is a kid’s trick, at some point it is easier to just do it yourself

Perfect silverware placement was a given at my parents’ home. Another mandatory rule of my mom’s: Serve coffee with cake, and serve tea with all other desserts!

why does the silverware have to match? Does it matter? Silverware all works the same.

I almost always put out mismatched forks because there’s just one fork in the drawer that I like the best (and my spouse careth not), so I use it, then hand-wash it for use the next day. Spouse gets a fork that matches her spoon and knife. And no, I don’t have OCD. Much.
