In the Endtown tradition I could see this going down: Babar over there explodes after touching the recorder. The Topsider teleports to safety somehow only needing some unwitting numbskull to complete the circuit. While has the side effect of making him into many small pieces. This leaves Wally and Duffy alone in a race against time not to die. Complicating this is that they have more or less betrayed each other in ways that led to the situation being worse. Wally kept Duffy from ending the Topsider and Duffy kept Wally from saving his family. Maybe out of pure spite for the former.
I’m thinking that Allen and Duffy (who’s still carrying Wally) need to touch the tape recorder because it became aligned with the Topsider’s plane of existence, thus they’ll become aligned with her and all be able to transport out at once. They need to trust her, in any case. She knows more about what exactly is going on and how to repair it than any of them.
BlimmoD.Clown, above, has the most interesting speculation: There’s no time left, if they are going to survive, they have to get out now with the is-she-or-isn’t-she-a topsider.
This reality ends and only Wally, Duffy, and Allen escape.
Which means, yes, Kirbee, Chic, Irving, and everyone else either dies or ceases to exist, whichever is worse.
Or maybe, like Star Trek, at some point, Wally gets to go back in time to rescue his family. Of course, going back in time would help Duffy save his brother, too.
But for now, maybe it’s curtains for Kirbee, Chic, and Irving.
Maybe in a future arc, Wally can come back to get them.
Final thought: Neathery has never hesitated to kill off characters, even popular ones, like Walter Trimbull.
Who knows? This Friday cliffhanger was posted Monday, so maybe they’re all traveling through time, anyway…

Is Wally coming to? His ears are pinned back—not loose.

Ouch! I just noticed that only two get to touch the transporter recorder, and Allen has just about made his move!
Only two of them get to survive (along with the Topsider)!
Which two?

Say, guys, when you get to the 8th Dimension say “Hello” to Buckaroo Banzai, because wherever you go, there you are.
And for the above commenters, Duffy can touch the recorder while carrying Wally. So they all go.
