Sadly there are people who actually did this when enlisting in the US military. They failed to read their contract fully, and to understand the totality of it. Some failed to understand that all contracts are for a minimum of 8 years. Whatever is left over after their period of active duty/reserves/guard is then served in the inactive reserves, where they can be subject to recall. E.g., active duty of 3 years, then with another 5 years in the inactive reserves.
