As an atheist, I feel qualified to put myself in Godwin’s place, and reply on his behalf, “Actually, it does make sense, because it’s just what we’re called. It doesn’t mean we all spend our time praying, or that all of us necessarily subscribe to any particular system of religious belief.”
It’s wrong to assume that someone behaves in a specific way just because they identify (or are identified by others) as a member of a particular group.
