Not to be outdone, the sanitation collectors decided around 1980 that they should be called “New York’s Strongest.” I hope the double entendre was intentional.
And if my memory serves, in the 1980s, after the sanitation union began demanding to be paid the same as the cops and the firefighters, the cops’ and firefighters’ unions put up billboards reading “Pay parity for sanitation collectors? GARBAGE!”
