I have a friend who has a neighbor that used to borrow my friend’s tools and mostly brought them back broken/ruined. The worst part of that – the neighbor has those same tools but does not use them for fear of breaking/ruining them. My friend has finally gotten smart after seeing this and now refuses to “lend” his tools to that neighbor.

Can I borrow your shovel?
Of course! Here you are. – What do you mean it’s ruined? Can’t be: that’s the one you borrowed from me last time.

Now Pete has a shovel for Stan the next time he wants to borrow one.

I think that Pete may be using that shovel for some plumbing issues.

Methinks Pete should demand a refundable deposit (sizeable enough to buy a replacement) for anything Stan borrows.
