Back in the late 1950s, when I was in high school, we had a modern washing machine but no dryer, and it was my job to gather the weekly laundry, wash, and hang it to dry. However, my labor wasn’t cheap—I got horseback riding lessons out of the deal, and rushed to get it all done before time for my lesson.

You’re lucky, same period my job was to clean and fill the copper. I also had to look after the fire and from about eight supply the wood, from the bush. My reward was clean sheets and clothes.

Birds would poop on my clean clothes. The sheets were stiff, and blue jeans and shirts had to be ironed. And this was after being washed in a wringer washer. No thanks!

We used to hang up clothes in the back yard when I was little, before we got the dryer. Most of the time the laundry dried just fine…but when a dusty wind came up, we were rushing around to get the laundry in before it was all dirty again. Then there were the winter days when it rained for days…

That’s what my wife thinks my labor is.
