When I visited the French colonial fort of Ft Luxembourg in Nova Scotia, they said the reason that “raising the white flag” is regarded as a surrender is that the way Europeans signaled a desire to “parley” was by raising the other side’s flag. A parley was usually a prelude to surrender. In the 18th century, the French king’s flag was plain white, & the French won so often that raising their flag took over as the parley signal, eventually morphing into a surrender signal. Anyway, that was their story…
