I remember a couple of kerfuffles here in India, when Western (German and US, if memory serves) tried to patent Turmeric, Neem and some other traditionally used remedies as medicines!
It is indeed tricky making a profit on freely available produce. I’ll bet someone could find a way to make a profit on grass if they put their mind to it. Maybe bank on leaves as well.
Old news. Now they just scare the life out of people with the prescription info sheet. Instead of giving practical info about how to take a med and reasonable descriptions of its possible side effects, the sheet shouts that the drug company cannot be held responsible for anything that happens when one takes the med.
Last one I received was printed on 5×8 sheet in 8pt type – almost invisible. Was just about possible to see there was text on the page but no way to read it. The word toxic was included, even though that did not apply. And the recommended safe handling precautions would put most med offices to shame.
Like the Buttercup-in-chief, CYA has become a mantra for avoiding responsibility.
Indoor grows do allow you to create the exact conditions you want. Go for it, but don’t think you’ll ever corner the market. The US fe’ral govmint got itself a patent in 2003 for cannabis (no. 6,630,507) but couldn’t slow down the real market if it conscripted everyone into the DEA. They might as well give up the game and legalize.

it’s a plant that the government wants to control, readily available if you know someone, and is now legal in all of Canada and some states.

Look at this as an exercise in logistics if not in ethics.
