Too bad that a subscription to the Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE) online is $49 a year. (Make it $20 and I’ll sign.) But hints from Google indicate that “chuckhole” is midwestern. (Just the other day my GF asked me if I’d ever heard of a “thank-you-ma’am”. Just all the time. She’s not from around here.)
Potholes, a glaring example of worsening infrastructure decay. Around here seeing the pothole brigade was a sure sign that spring was coming (like the ground hog…). Now, they are a permanent fixture year round.
In Ireland a lot of the rental cars have the hubcaps zip tied to the wheel because of the narrow roads with drainage ditches along them, a lot of side mirrors are banged up as well. The tourists beat up those cars quite a bit.

Yup, getting to be that time in Michigan. Next, you’ll see all the orange barrels that have come home to spawn…

Mom once left the road, flying over into a field. Lost ALL 4 hubcaps!

How MANY holes…

Maybe (like me) she just doesn’t bother to replace them, since they don’t actually serve any purpose.

According the Merriam-Webster a pothole is pot-shaped and a chuckhole is just a hole or rut in a road. A distinction without a difference.

Here’s a good piece on what the language is doing with these two words.

Hubcaps are rare. He’s referring to wheel covers most likely.

What kind of jalopy is she rolling that still uses hubcaps?

Mrs. Olsen just needs the ’68 Charger from Bullitt with its endless supply of hubcaps.
