Remember, “when it’s burning it’s cooking, when it’s black it’s done”.

We had that same system whenever my mom made steak or liver… when you heard the smoke alarm, you knew it was supper time. And you knew mom also made hotdogs for me and my siblings!

I recently stayed in a rental apartment that had a smoke detector near the kitchen ceiling. Every time anyone put bread in the toaster the smoke alarm went off just as the toast popped up, perfectly brown.

Yup. This is the case at our place, too, whenever someone uses the oven.

I get that sometimes, though I’m not really burning anything.

That seems to be a recurring theme in the comics.

Gracie Allen (the persona) would always cook a large roast and a small roast together. When the small roast burnt up, the large one was done.
