Back in the day, I had a college professor remark that all writers steal from one another; but the trick was to steal only from the best. (That same professor also noted that there were really only two plots in the world; Death and Sex. Everything else was merely detail on how the protagonist attained or avoided either or both those conditions. He also acknowledged that the two could be metaphorical.)
This sounds like a startling high percentage of political arguments, except that they rarely end this nicely. See also: Averting the Flame Wars’ comics on Differing Definitions.
(Yes, I understand that this often isn’t the problem, and no, I don’t mean that this problem is caused by people being stupid on either side of the argument.)
