I’ve been in several different states and the wording on this sign varies. Some of them come up with contorted expressions in an attempt to be grammatically correct and gender-neutral.
I think “Wash your hands before leaving” would be sufficient.
Another sign I saw in an airport public restroom: “You are required to wash your hands before returning to work”. I almost didn’t because I was on vacation.
I’ve posted this before, but many, many years ago, Hubby and two other fellows were in the restroom at work. One fellow, who was wearing black checkered pants, started for the door, and Hubby reminded him to wash his hands.
“Nah, I don’t believe in that stuff.” The other man also spoke up, to no avail. After the first fellow left, the second man turned to my husband, showed him a badge from the Health Department, and followed the first man out the door.
Black checkered pants are the “uniform” for chefs, and one got fired that afternoon.
Every time I saw the sign “Employees must wash hands…” I’d tell someone that works there that I was waiting, but no employee came in to wash my hands. I figure I wasn’t the only one, because I haven’t seen one of those signs worded like that in awhile.

Not a bad idea to have that signage in abundance in what few places are still open to the public.

Employees please wash hands. If employee not available, please do it your self.

Then they have these blow dryers and no towels so you have to touch the dirty door handle to get out.
