I’m wondering if this could be the harbinger of a long-term shift in the way that some people work and study. Perhaps more people will actually work from home full-time from now on, since a lot of work is done on-line, or by remote meetings anyway… and a lot of schooling as well…
Many colleges and universities have been pushing “distance education” for a few years now. I don’t like the idea, but I thought maybe that’s because I’m old and grumpy and set in my ways, so I polled my students, and they don’t like it. They like to come in to the classroom to have face-to-face discussions.
K-12 schools, public and private, have been closed in Santa Clara county (Ground Zero for COVID-19 in the USA) distance/on line learning for those who have the capabilities.
“Americans should be prepared that they are going to have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fauci-says-americans-must-be-prepared-to-hunker-down-more/ar-BB11dwhm?li=BBnb7Kz
Although it’s unclear whether foodstuffs can transmit the coronavirus (Covid-19), the FDA is suspending “food safety inspections overseas through at least April because of the coronavirus.” https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2020/03/coronavirus-stops-fda-from-conducting-foreign-food-safety-inspections/
Working from home was never this… tranquil… when I did it. Worse than house-spouse multi-tasking because the kids need attention, the pets need attention, the dishwasher and the laundry need attention, somebody has to clean up the mess etc. AND you have to put in 8 hours worth (which is actually only 5, if your co-workers leave you alone) of paid work. Though I guess there’s not so much driving kids to soccer kind of stuff this time around…

Just to be safe, I locked the kids in the shed. Calm down, I’ll feed them.

Distant learning from home tends to have more home than learning involved. Discussion and motivation tend to receive less attention.
