I wonder if the new artist looks at the comments——here and elsewhere. Most of us don’t like her style for this strip. It’s beautiful artwork, but not for Heart.
There’s an article in today’s Star Ledger newspaper about Steenz and how difficult it is for people of color, especially women of color, to get syndicated. An excellent article, with a photo of Steenz and her rendition of Heart. My heart goes out to her and her struggles of acceptance with fans of this strip. Color makes her work pop, so I’m looking forward to her first Sunday strip.
I’ve been reading the funnies for almost70 years. I love the old Heart. The new one is different. That said, I think it is way superior the much of the mean, sloppy, and snarky stuff that passes for comics these days. I wish Steenz all the luck in the world!
For those of you who keep whining about Steenz taking over the strip, I strongly encourage you to google “Neil Gaiman Entitlement Issues”, read the journal entry, and *take*it*to*heart*.
Mark Tatulli didn’t want to continue the strip, and Steenz was gracious enough to be willing to take up his characters. You’re welcome to thank him, as I do, for the many years he gave. But I don’t want to read works by people who don’t want to do it anymore.
If the choice is moving from Chris Claremont to Fabien Nicieza on X-Men, or being stuck in the endless 1962 of Family Circus, I know what my choice is.
When I read that Steenz was taking over, I went to read her other works to decide if I wanted to continue — and am super glad I did! Steenz, Archival Quality was amazing, and I’m looking forward to where you’re going with Heart!
Tomorrow is a big day for Dean. Will Steenz have something for that? (if you forget why tomorrow will be a big day for Dean just ask yourself what day it will be. It won’t be February the 29th, it will be…..)
The new Heart strip is Heart of the City in name only. I do not see the rational of changing the characters of a strip and the style of the strip but keeping the name of the strip it is replacing. I thought the best course to have been taken would to officially retired the Heart strip, then GC could do an archive run and run Steenz’s strip as a brand new strip with no references to Heart in the City.
Can someone provide me directions to finding the Heart comic from the beginning? I didn’t start reading it from the start, and I would like to. I really liked Heart best as an innocent child with a sweet best friend.
I read this strip for many years , starting with newspaper and then here later on. I’ve enjoyed it and the characters all that time, even enjoyed the slight age ups that happened over time that was really unique. I’m sad that the Tatulli strips are over ( minus a couple Sundays) but glad I got to see them and the archives will exist.
I am a little sad to see the change in design because to me it’s jarring because the attachment is there. I may try to get to like the new ones, I may not. I don’t know. Change is hard. Just want to say, I am thankful for the years of enjoyment the strip brought me to read each day.
After looking at Steenz’s Twitter page introducing an expanded cast of characters, I predict that Heart of the City will go the way of Barney Google and Thimble Theater. The Barney Google strip changed to focus on Snuffy Smif with Barney becoming a once a year visitor. Popeye wound up taking over the entire strip, eclipsing the Oyl family. Heart will fade away, I fear.
Today’s strip reminded me to put away the Christmas wreath which was in one corner of our porch and I kept saing to myself that I should take it down…well… I did it today!
Sorry to see this Strip change so much. Loved the honesty of the old Heart story lines, and the art work. Not interested in the new heart, but wish the artist all the best.
You know what? I really like Tatulli’s version of middle school Heart. She seems like a much more quirky, introspective, and charming character than the younger Heart was. It’s too bad he didn’t do more with her because this version of her character had potential.

Did the strip change artists or what?

I was afraid to see the Sunday strip after the changes this week, but yay! Good old Heart is back!

Sunday strips are typically on a longer lead-time than dailies. This is a Tatulli left-over.

Steenz’s Sunday strips will begin on May 24.

Also, here’s a nice character rundown from Steenz’s Twitter account as well:

Leaving aside the lack of a Steenz sunday, OG Heart could be pretty dark when it wanted to be.

It was nice to see the original again. I will give Steenz credit – adding color was a major boost.

Am I the only one who wishes Mark had kept “Heart” and palmed “Lio” of on someone else instead?
