Even tape direction arrows on the floor aisles did nothing at our neighborhood market….

I have two grocery stores that I most often go to. One of them has prices that are sometimes 10% to 20% higher for the identical product, but the aisles are about 50% wider.

The aisles of our Supermarkets are wide enough to pass each other with the shopping cart. Yet now at every aisle there’s a sign “Enter when 5 or fewer customers ONLY!”

The use of a shopping cart is now mandatory, the number of people per cart limited to two, and the number of shopping carts provided is now limited according to the capacity of the shopping area if social distancing would be strictly adhered to. (Which few people do.)

I was used to fold my Brompton (folding bike) down to shopping cart mode, but now I have to fold it completely and put it in the cart or lay it onto the carts lower platform. No harm done as I never buy so much bulky stuff that a cart would be filled more than halfway.

I haven’t yet had to stand in line to get into a supermarket. The town where I live and the one where I work are both fairly small.

The direction arrows are an annoyance. Among other things, If I pass by an aisle where I know I don’t need anything, then the next aisle, where I do need something, will have the arrows pointing the other way. So I end up just going up and down every aisle. Maybe it’s good for the store. More impulse buys.

“Sir, you are required to wear a mask.” “My freedumb. I just won’t go in.” “Thank you.”

Stocking during the day in the new era of social distancing is a real challenge

On one trip to the store, I encountered a lady who was causing traffic pile ups like that on purpose – she didn’t seem to be shopping, she just went up and down the aisles finding customers , stood in front of them to block them and then proceeded to … grin at them . Didn’t speak, just grinned. Haven’t seen her again thankfully, not sure if she was asked to leave or just got bored. Either way, not the time to be testing people’s general patience levels.

Then there are those who feel that the direction arrows do not pertain to them.

Some of our stores are marking their floors with arrows to create “one way” aisles. It sometimes works, but there’s always someone who ignores directional arrows and causes exactly what is shown in the cartoon above. :D
