My Mom was orthodox Christian and my Dad a Catholic. I asked my Mom why she didn’t convert. Her rely was “your Dad makes the sign of the cross left to right but my sign of the cross is right to left”. Can’t argue that logic! But as a youngster I got two Christmas Holidays and two Easters. When she was very old and ill I asked her nurse for an Orthodox clergy for her. Father Murphy shows up! I must have looked surprised. His next sentence was, “I am a convert.”

It’s amusing to reflect that one of the earliest (and bitterest) schisms in the Christian community was connected with quarrels over when to celebrate easter. Or even whether: since every Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection, it makes no theological sense to single out one particular Sunday. But humans do love an anniversary, so it was inevitable, but the lag resulted in disputes over when to do the deed. And whether it was OK for Easter celebrations to occur on Passover.

My father was Scots-Irish Methodist, and my mother was Ukrainian Catholic (from the western Ukraine, a sub-sect of Roman Catholicism whose priests are allowed to marry), so I’m a true Orange Catholic‼
