God didn’t give the command to “keep holy the Sabbath” (or any of them, for that matter) for God’s sake, because God needs the worship. God gave it for our sake–so that we might get some good out of being together, encountering God, retelling the stories, being nourished, and generally being reminded of what we are about.
Final word: I’ll bet that, even this time, he was carried in. So don’t blame him for coming.
bmonk..right you are. In fact not only in the Hebrew scriptures or “Old Testament” are the people instructed to set aside time, “keep Holy the sabath” but also in the Greek scriptures or “New Testament” are Christians given similar instruction.
The apostle Paul said, “And let us consider one another to incite to love and fine works not forgeting the gathering of yourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another and all the more so as you observe that day drawing closer.” (Heb. 10:25-25)
Sad to say, far too many if not most people choose to ignore this very good advice.
Aaaah! And more people are choosing not to be matched. But some people show up when other family or friends are hatched, matched or dispatched. If you consider that, then possibly they are attending church twice as much as you thought ;)
Who? The ones who write the pastor to complain that they need some new music–since every time they come, the congregation has to sing either Silent Night or Jesus Christ Is Risen Today?
I guess we take ‘em when we can get ‘em and perhaps they will like what they see and hear, feel welcome and decide they are missing something of value….maybe come for Hot dogs, watermelon and fireworks on the 4th of July out at a church member’s farm.
By the way, ♥Kab♥, one tool for finding such quotes is a Bible Concordance–a good library (like at a college) should have one. It lists all the occurrences of a specific word in the translation they use. So here, you could look up, say, “Mustard” (or even “Mustard seed”) and get:
Mt 13:31, Mt 17:20, Mk 4:31, Lk 13:19, Lk 17:6.
Then it’s easy enough to look up the verses and find the one you want. (If you get too many results, look up another word and cross-check the results to weed them down.)
Many concordances will give a line of text or so, which also helps–you just look down the list and find the one or two you want.
I don’t know my Bible verses either…. Sometimes one has to accept less than pleasant things about oneself and others and the process is not very pleasant. Then they can try to put things in perspective and improve what they can. (Too bad it isn’t a one time deal.)
I wonder if there is anything in the Bible about people who help others through trying times that would do a better job saying……
Ooops Matt: 7:12 is familiar and wraps up a message of living our lives. I like to keep things simple and expand learning from that. The “blessed are you…” are found in Matt: 5: I like them and they take a bit of thought to get what they are saying. Blessed are the peacemakers has much in it to consider as does Blessed are the merciful and what pure in heart means etc.
Just the little I have come to know of you through your comments tells me you are a caring person, quick to help, with fun in your heart and searching for answers. I think you are too hard on yourself many times. I know I have been told that as I struggle to be a loving person. etc. etc.
In my Missouri vernacular, I think you are a keeper, Ooops!

@cfr5502, the one problem with your theory is that the priests were involved in sacrifice (in the temple), not in the Sabbath observances.
