Children don’t belong in those places. Pool and bar venues are often associated with crime elements such as bikers and drug dealers. This was run 30 years ago but it was true even back then. I have been to a few and I never stayed long. I was given an address and when I showed up and saw a pool hall, I went in to meet friends and said hi and bye and headed out. These places are creepy. I’m with Elly. John is naive – he seems to be in quite many instances. He came from the farm so I suspect that had a lot to do with his naive nature. And he is male – pool/bar venues are masculine places which is the obvious draw. Now a bank of pools in the chain family restaurants such as Dave and Buster? That is different. They gear to the families with kids who play a number of children games and arcades. The strip mall pool/bar or stand alone – avoid those.
My Dad used to take my sister and I into this smokers parlor when I was younger. It was filled with smoke as thick as fog and jazz music. When I told my Mom about it after one weekend, she was indeed not very happy with him. I didn’t have overnight visits with my Dad for a while after that happened.
My bff and I would take her two kids with us to a bar we frequented. In the afternoon. To play pool and we didn’t drink anything but sodas. The kids got Shirley Temples and loved it :) It was a family bar type place. And there were other kids as well, so they had a good time playing.
We’d only stay til like 4 pm with them, then go home. It was just something to do to get out of the house.
Wasn’t there a musical about pool halls? Lyrics included:“By the presence of a pool table in your community.Ya got trouble, my friend, right here,I say, trouble right here in River City.”
One of our favorite restaurants in San Diego was the Boll Weevil. It was on either Harbor Island or Shelter Island…don’t remember which. Fabulous hamburgers, nice pool tables, great beer selection. Loved their sign “Boll Weevil….Beer….Pool” I used to picture a swimming pool filled with beer LOL.
Plus, I watched Pool, snooker AND Billiards from the old high seats in pool hall. Some of the best, well dressed, personable players ever including bankers, lawyers Doctors….etc AND some very good pool playing!
A while back, we ran across an ancient broadcast of a pool tournament between two of the greatest players ever. One of them was “Minnesota” Fats (Rudolph Wanderone) and the other was Willy Mosconi. Watching those two was amazing.
Pool is the perfect activity. Quiet enough to talk or listen to music. Elements of physics. Goes great with any beverage. Cheap. So satisfying when you break or when you sink one! Plenty of drama, but all in fun. The days I spent at my college pool room were some of the best ever with the best conversation and the best people. Met many friends there. It wasn’t all boys either. My friend Sara was fantastic. Many of us also played board games and poker, but everyone was welcome.

You don’t want anyone to know you’ve been in this place? Is it a brothel or a meth lab, just off panel? lol

Seems like the perfect job for Fiona! We all have our first beer and cigarette somewhere. At least Fiona might watch out for Mike and his friends!!

I spent more than a few Saturday nights in a Pool Hall, starting with my Senior year in H.S. until they seem to decline in the 80’s

John – why in the world are you taking your family here and talking to Fiona? Want her to move back in with you again and repeat that nightmare?
