Did Melcher move to someplace like Newfoundland where the time is off by a half-hour?

Very first speech ever at what is now known as ‘Speaker’s Corner’, which centered on the topic, “Why recruits should never make passes at the general’s daughter”.

If you asked me to place a bet/ on “log vs bayonet”/ the advantage of height/ is probably slight-/ disembowelment is more of a threat.

I’m sure the artist had a point to make with this painting. But other than the bayonet, I fail to see it.

I suspect that this is a Yankee guarding a Rebel captive, who is being “punished” by standing on the box and holding a log. Painted in 1863 – Homer was a war correspondent (for Harper’s Magazine, I believe). He painted many such works, stressing the contrast between the relatively “orderly”, well-equipped Yankees and the shabby, rustic (yet generally courageous) Rebs. BTW: that war seems to be continuing. Distressing…

“Prisoners from the Front” is Winslow Homer’s best-known Civil War painting. You can Googl the image. It is a “cousin” to this work !! (sorry to be serious. LOL!)

A feather in a cap essentially indicates number of enemies killed. So he is being guarded to keep from killing a second person?
