I have two dogs, and they don’t listen to what I say either. Had a cat, and he was definitly an animal with his own mind. I agree with you Clark, I like dogs. but I do love the cats I have had in my life.

@Clark Kent: I’ve got that same problem with most humans.

Muffin, Muffin, little bitty Muffin girl…come home and eat your own food…This is the morning chant after Muffin has ben out for a couple hours. Does she listen? Just as well as the one in the cartoon. When she does come in she will cry for her treats.

I’ve trained a cat before… make a squirrel sound or snap your finger a certain way and he came running. Say “hey,” especially loudly or snap your fingers more strongly (especially if the cat is somewhere he’s not supposed to be) and he gets. Say “no,” and he stops and say “go away” (especially if adding a little hand/arm motion) and the cat goes.
It’s not perfect… turn your head and he’d try and go places he knows he’s not supposed to be, especially if you’re away. But at least he didn’t chuck up on anything but the bare floor. But those nails were horrible.
I’m certainly not a cat guy, but I guess treating the cat more like a dog did help. Then again, he was a Siamese mix so he was probably smarter than most cats.

A cat will come when you call – but only if it wants to!

I watched an old VHS tape of the “Ed Sullivan Show” the other day and they had a variety act with poodles dancing on two legs..terriers climbing a ladder, and two cats crawling and balancing on a high wire…
.I always wondered why I hadn’t come across the phrase ‘difficult as herding cat’s’ until just 10 years ago..

How to Train Your Cat? That’s a little dull. How to Train Your Dragon? That’s where the excitement is.

How to train a cat? One word: Supersoaker.

@momazilla My parents have a cat that ignores being shot with water, even from a Supersoaker! (Left over from my younger brother and I.)
Growing up with cats, I have also noticed that each cat has their own personality and language.

You’ll all hate me for saying this but I’m fostering a “teenager” (mostly grown kitten) who comes when I whistle, he plays fetch, sits, and will even roll over!

Some cats are better than others. My cat can be left alone all day in the apartment, soaking in the sun near the window. He’s got lots of food and water. But when I come home, he’s like a little puppy - for the most part. He meets me at the door. Follows me every where. Likes to get outside on the balcony for fresh air. Sits with me while I watch TV. Follows me to bed at night and stays with me until I fall asleep, and greets me in the morning when I awake. Only part I am not fond of is when he has the “hairballs” or “food hacks.” But for that, as long as I feed him a daily dose of good plain yogurt, he is usually fine.
