Sine: Oh! You're reading the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri! Horace: In Italian, no less. Sine: La Divina Commedia, eh? It's one of the greatest works of world literature. Horace: Yeah... but somehow I'm not convinced. Sine: I don't know you could speak Italian. Horace: Well I can't

Some year ago I read an English version of The Divine Comedy.
Total waste of time, I never laughed once.

Hey, whatsamattaforyou Horace?

I do know at least one person who learned Italian just so he could read the Divine Comedy.
I has much the same role in Italian that Shakespeare has in English.
Naturally Horace is using it to act erudite.

Tim said, Hey Coyoty, I spent a week inSane once - is that anywhere near Limbo?
That depends if they prescribed you a purgatory.

The original was in Italian, NOT Latin. It was one of the first great works of European Literature written in the vernacular for the general public rather than in Latin for the clergy and the aristocracy.

I enjoy reading things in the original language when possible. I read “Amor en los Tiempos de Colera” last year in Spanish and I’m currentlly reading the full works of Chaucer (and will also read Divine Comedy evenually).

@vldazzle: You should try reading the master piece of the spanish literature “Don Quijote de la Mancha” by Cervantes, I’m also trying to read some of the greatest in their original language, i’m reading now Les Miserables and Le comte de Montecristo and I read le petit prince (my favorite of all) I’ve read some of Shakespeare and I hope to find an Italian version of La Divina Commedia. What else could you advise me to read in english language?
