Since I only began dropping by here last year I thought it would be fun (and interesting) to go back to the beginning of Red and Rover. Going to take some time as it began in 2000. Glad Brian Basset dropped Red’s older brother.
My Shepherd would sell his soul for a good Butt Scratch. There is no question what he wants. When I sit down for breakfast, he comes to me, turns around, and pushes his rear end up against my leg.
I am not a dog person. I did not grow up around dogs, though I did have the occasional interactions with the dogs of friends, neighbors, even a relative or two. I didn’t have the growing-up-with-a-dog experience. I don’t feel I “missed out”, or that my life would be profoundly better if I had it.
All that said, I really enjoy this strip because of the way Brian depicts the relationship between Red and Rover. It’s everything you’d want the boy-dog experience to be.
This is my dog. (No, I mean literally, I own this dog. Right down to the little markings on the head. I have to find a way to post and link to a picture…)

A good ear rub with a Milky Bone chaser would be perfect!

Red loves you Rover so he doesn’t like to see you sad, only happy and a nice rub and a treat is just what you need to get you back to your happy self.

As they used to sing on Sesame Street: “One of these panels (things) is not like the other…”

Above the ear is fine, but a dog with hanging ears loves a gentle massage under it.
