Actually, you DO alternate them (you’re just not usually aware of it.) The nostrils are the second body part with erectile tissue (yes, that type of erectile tissue) and will actually swell up some internally and restrict the airflow in that side. Then after a min or so, it’ll switch sides.
I (and many other people) are well aware of this when sleeping as if I’m laying on one side, the downward nostril will swell and make it harder to breath. If I roll over or sit up, I can feel it drain back down and then the other side will close up after a while.

“The nasal cycle is the often unnoticed12 alternating partial congestion and decongestion of the nasal cavities in humans and other animals. It is a physiological congestion of the nasal conchae, also called the nasal turbinates, due to selective activation of one half of the autonomic nervous system by the hypothalamus. It should not be confused with pathological nasal congestion. The nasal cycle was studied and discussed in the ancient yoga literature of pranayama.3 In the modern western literature, it was first described by the German physician Richard Kayser in 1895.4”

That doesn’t sound like a good thing to me. It sounds like your nose is stopped up.

Trout wants to be more inquisitive with her nostrils, I guess she just wants to be “nosey”.
