Esau traded his heritage for some pottage. He was richer than Jacob until then. Jacob left with nothing and came back with far more than he left behind.
For many, Do I have money? I shall spend it.
Am I broke? I will try to get money.
Do I have money? I shall spend it.
Throw in credit, and the question becomes, Do I have credit? I shall spend.
Have I maxed out my credit? I will pay it down a little.
I read an article many years ago about why some people never get a head. The woman who wrote it was broke/poor. She received a fair amount f money, probably as a gift rather than an inheritance, and spent it. Her attitude was “I’m broke, but now that I have some money I can get that cut-glass motorcycle I’ve been wanting, and a new . . .” until there was nothing left. Later – the basis of the article – she looked around and realized that other people who were in the same boat did the same thing.
After reading it, I thought about how things had been when I was married to the Late and Unlamented. I was always behind in what I needed for myself or the girls that any bit of extra cash flew out the window the second it came in.

Perhaps they are poor because the minimum wage sucks.
