Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for April 05, 2011
Transcript:
Jimmy: In fairness to the Beyonces, Ushers, Stings, 50 Cents and Mariah Careys... nobody makes it a career goal to play lucrative private gigs for brutal dictators. Selling out is a gradual thing. It can start with a benefit gig for a local political hack, then a private party for some hedge fund manager... Mark: Then, before you know it... Jimmy: Yup - you're taking requests from the evil seed of Moammar Gadhafi!

A golden opportunity has been missed. Instead of overt war in Libya, they could have arranged a Spinal Tap concert. Crank it to eleven and incapacitate the government.

Great reference Jeff. I had hoped he would be in the movie, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Like when Elton John played at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding.

Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and Picasso are just a few of the myriad of artists who have accepted commissions and support from less than savory individuals. “Selling out” is a phrase used by supercilious twits who lack the talent to achieve on their own.

Pathetic attempt at blurring the point, Sadfan. The performers mentioned in today’s strip are millionaires themselves. They needn’t perform private shows for dictators & tyrants.
Jnik, Elton John’s performing for Rush Limbaugh’s wedding was mentioned frequently yesterday. It is hardly relevant to Doonesbury’s point here.
Limbaugh is an unimportant unfunny comic little fuzzball . He is a performer, like Sir Elton, only with much less talent.
Besides, Limbaugh didn’t hear any of Sir Elton’s performance, anyway. He’s deaf, and who can picture him shutting up long enough to listen to even one song?

Jimmy can sing at Limbaugh’s next wedding.

These entertainers are held in too high of a regard in this society and it needs to stop. They’re clowns, court jesters, dancing bears, fools.
Are you going to get up in Nike’s face if his sons wore those too? They make money by singing and dancing, and they need to make lots of it before they get so old, people will throw up looking at Beyonce shake her old fat wrinkly behind.

Merm, Rush Limbaugh is a demagogic comic radio entertainer. Taking what he says seriously is a mistake, as it is with any demagogue: Joe McCarthy, Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan, & al.

In re yesterday’s discussion (and previous colloquies below other strips):
Nola, calm down. The tone of your remark belies your claim that you refrain from seething cauldrons of rage.
Who mentioned Keith Olbermann? Please find any touting, in my name, of Olbermann. In his defense, however, he, unlike Rush Limbaugh, is not a racist.
I seldom watched Olbermann’s show, and when I did, found it occasionally accurate, occasionally insightful, but predictably shallow. He began as a sports reporter, and his political insights remain at that level. Limbaugh began as a d.j., and his insights remain at that level.
Neither Olbermann nor Limbaugh is worth the attention of anyone thoughtful. Unfortunately, as your attempt to argue against medical insurance helping a woman pay for her needed abortion showed (see Slowpoke, March 29th), being thoughtful sometimes slips your grasp.
Searching for facts about Limbaugh’s use of Chrissie Hynde’s song, I found the article that seemed most authoritative with the information I offered above. Considering that Hynde does not want to be daily associated with Limbaugh (who would?), she probably suggested the payment, rather than refuse the rights to the song, which song-writers & performers can do.
I am glad that you have overtly supported P.B.S. & N.P.R. I intend to do the same the moment that my life quiets down, and I give to my local station regularly, of course.
P.S.: No radio today (at least, not in the house) or t.v., neither: I’m going back to l.p.s. Playing the White Album right now. You know? It’s still good. (“I’d give you anything I’ve got for a little peace of mind.”)

Do you think BEP will sell out? They did for the superbowl!

jrmerm, give it up. When it comes to delivering hate, the Rush-bashers outdo him 10 to 1. Since their feeding-frenzy rationalizations are built upon emotion, not logic, you’ll never be able to educate them out of it. After all, most of them will tell you that they have never listened to Rush and yet those are the folks who have especially strong opinions against him – they’re just dutifully repeating talking points that others have helpfully pre-digested for them. It’s his success that really gets them ballistic, not anything he’s actually said or done. This is fairly typical of people who are quick to call other people “liars” but too afraid to expose themselves to more than one comfortable side of any point of view.
Rush is certainly an entertainer, not a journalist, in the way that GT is. Whenever Rush makes predictions about the failure of liberal programs and campaign promises, he doesn’t have any special sources, nor is he being clairvoyant - he’s merely stating the obvious. What makes it shocking is that very few others do. Rush would be very boring if he wasn’t alone.

See this article, Merm. There is plenty of evidence, but I must go to work: http://mediamatters.org/research/200910160044.

Hi ho, hi ho …
Since we’re on the subject, don’t forget Limbaugh gets a rush from Hillbilly heroin, that may be what caused him to go deaf. If you want to have some fun, the next time you see Rush, mouth the words “Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot”, and watch him check his hearing aid.
… and he got busted with someone else’s Viagra coming back from Haiti. Poor Haitians they catch hell every time they turn around. I can’t think of any people who’ve suffered as much as them, and Limbaugh’s wives.

Why the Limbaugh bashing? He’s a lot more than an entertainer, and he is a foe of tyrants
Puulleeasse! A tyrant is by definition one who rules outside the law. Limbaugh has been an advocate of George W. Bush, who became PotUS by unconstitutional means.

Of course Limberger smells bad, but do we have to smear it al over every commentary on the works of Doonsbury? Just asking.
