The high-dive in our small town never closes – the bridge over the river is at least ten metres above the water; and it must have been Caulfield we saw yesterday. Canoeing up to the bridge, we saw two kids jump; so we stopped to watch the third as he stood holding the railing. When we shouted that the river, a busy waterway, was clear, he replied, “But I’m scared to jump!”
Never was able to commit, to use the spring of the board. There are those who are comfortable up there, and those who aren’t . I was always in the aren’t group. I did it, both jumped and dived, and survived, always hated it, but group pressure is a great motivator.
Frazz the only safety they were worried about, was the financial safety of the city. Lawsuits have taken so much away from the USA. In fact our tourist beach town used to have lifeguards until people tried suing the city because the lifeguard couldn’t save the morons that went out in rip tides. Americans just don’t take responsibility for their actions, and look for someone else to blame.
Our school did’t have a pool, but used a nearby community pool that had an actual diving platform, way above “high dive” level. Something tells me they don’t let students jump off of that thing anymore.
I crawled out to the end and then stood up and toppled over (deliberately). After that it was easy: Canonballs, particularly with one leg extended can cause a spout of water that’s slightly under directional control… and the life guard was often my older sister…

If my eyes had been located where my feet were I would have found it much easier to jump from the high dive.

There should be a sign at the bottom of the high dive saying: one way only. Stragglers will be pushed…. encouraged.
