Is Irv using watercolors, oils, or pastels? Maybe it’s the paper. That can get expensive or is he using canvas? That’s even more expensive. Then you figure in the protective varnish…$900.00 might not be so bad after all.
Still the digital is the probably most economical way to go.
How many of us can still read a 3-1/2” floppy disc, much less 5-1/4” or worse yet, 8”? Have you re-recorded all those old 7” reels of audio tape, or has print-through masked the music already?
The CD-R you copied those pictures to (unless it’s very $$pecial) might last a year, before oxidation takes its toll on the unprotected metal layer.
A commercial CD or CD-ROM is better, since it’s sealed between two layers of polycarbonate, but don’t expect to be able to find a reader twenty years down the road!
Both bit-rot and technology creep are persistent problems, and are following us at the accelerated pace of new gear!

Better make it a twelve. That’s a big birdhouse. Just look at the birds gut.

You can forget about painting the floors, though… won’t do any good. Or maybe just pour a layer of concrete over them.
