I’m glad I grew up when clowns were funny and not considered any more scary than Santa Clause is to some small children.

I grew up with Mayor Art, the only clowns were from out of town.

Why is there that supposed fear of clowns? I never understood if it was supposed to be a joke or a reference to a horror movie.

Never had a “fear” of clowns, just a fear of being embarrassed by them. When i was really young, my uncle pulled some strings with the Shriners and got us front row seats at their circus. One of the acts had a clown running around with a bucket, looking to put out a fire. Spotlight lands on me, and I take the bucket of “water” (which turned out to be confetti) straight in the face. Of course, i flinched something awful thinking i was about to get soaked, and everyone laughed. Spent the rest of the show picking confetti out of my hair and every article of clothing. So yeah, I hate clowns, but not because they’re going to eat my soul — it’s more because there’s just no telling what they’ll get up to.

When I was in high school, I was at some event that had a couple of clowns. One of the clowns had a duck puppet and kept following me around putting that puppet on my shoulder. So annoying. Didn’t find out until a few days later that it was a high school friend of mine.
