Wow, what a cool story! In Germany, they make Lebkuchen on (unconsecrated) communion wafers (Oblaten-Lebkuchen). I always wondered why they were so un-tasty. Seems they needed to keep the commercial Oblaten factories busy! Altho it looks like nuns really made ‘em. So much for THAT theory! But look under your ginger Christmas cookies from Trader Joe’s this year, and you’ll see what I mean!
That’s interesting that they use the loaf of bread in some Catholic churches in Mexico! I know they use the leavened bread in some Eastern Orthodox rites, and some missions have a tradition of it (I think there’s a dispensation for that?). I love these comics about your first Holy Communion!
I went to a parish where they went all hippie with their wafers. It was more like actual bread, which was nice; but it also broke into a lot of crumbs in your mouth, and it was really easy for some of those crumbs to get in your windpipe. So every week after Communion, you could spot a number of parishioners who were clearing their throats and turning red in the face as they were desperately trying not to cough up Jesus.

Pedro, you must have done something very good as a youth to have avoided being struck by a bolt of lightning in panel 18!

That’s the way to eat the wafer bread.
